Introductory Award in Counselling Skills

Is the Course for me?

The Award in Counselling Skills aims to give you an introduction to counselling in preparation for further learning or training. The course will develop your listening skills and will also support you to develop skills needed in daily life and at work.

What is involved?

The main focus of this course is to build your knowledge and understanding of counselling. The units covered in the course will introduce you to skills essential for counselling and helping others.

Support Tutorials
Group and one to one tutorials are set up on the programme to further assist you with successfully completing the course. Support tutorials are at flexible times to meet your needs. This could occur during the daytime and evenings.

The work is internally assessed and there are no exams. There are two units to complete which are introducing Counselling Skills and Using Counselling Skills to help others.

Various assessment methods are used to ensure learning & teaching has taken place such as peer assessment, case studies, practical demonstration, role play, presentations and written assignments. Flexibility is provided for any learner with SEN; support is available from the SEN team. The maintenance of high standards is our priority, in order to make the lessons interesting and stimulating for all learners.


You may progress to a Level 2 Certificate course in Counselling Skills.

Course Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs Grade A* - E English & Maths and/or equivalent
  • Initial Diagnostic Assessment has to be completed before you are enrolled; you need to achieve Entry 3 English to be accepted on to the Level 1 course. This is to ensure you are put on the right course at the right level.
