The course serves as a stepping stone to progress on to a level three course, in order to go to HE and become a Nurse, Teacher, Early Years Practitioner or Social Worker. There are various progression routes to working in the Early Years sector
The course has eight units to be completed. They vary from Promoting Children’s Development, Making Healthy Food Choices for Children, Supporting Children’s Language and Literacy Development and Health and Safety in Early Years Settings. Furthermore, work placement is provided for two weeks in the year. However, this can be continued if it is negotiated with the organisation, or you can find your own voluntary work placement to increase your employability skills.
The work is internally and externally assessed. There are two external exams on Promoting Children’s Positive Behaviour and Patterns of Child Development. All other units are assessed through various methods to ensure teaching and learning has taken place. This includes peer assessment, case studies, practical demonstration, role play, presentations and written assignments.
Flexibility is provided for any learner with SEN; support is available from the SEN team. The maintenance of high standards is our priority, in order to make the lessons interesting and stimulating for all learners.
You will be retaking your GCSE Maths and English, if you did not achieve Grade C in any of these subjects, as part of your course to enable you to progress onto Level 3 qualifications.
Work Experience opportunity
As part of the programme you will conduct a two week work placement in a Early Years environment. This will allow you to apply your theoretical knowledge into a practical work setting.
A range of Enrichment activities are incorporated within the programme. Examples of Enrichment activities conducted are sport activities, workshops, outings and debates. There is also the opportunity to request other enrichment activities that you have an interest in.
I – Learning Sessions
This is additional time embedded in your programme for independent study. This time is used to work through assignments, complete homework activities and conduct wider reading and research to assist learning.
Group and one to one tutorials are set up on the programme to further assist you with successfully completing the course. Support tutorials are at flexible times to meet your needs. This could occur during the daytime and evenings.
Personal Learning Plan Sessions
A course tutor will be allocated to you on the programme. Your course tutor will be working with you to set realistic targets that will enable you to achieve. Your targets will be monitored regularly by your tutor and yourself.
Progress to a level three BTEC Award in Children’s Play, Learning and Development course at the college or do any level three courses in HSC. If you do not want to go through the academic route; you can work in the Childcare sector
There are always opportunities to volunteer in a Childcare organisation, with the opportunity of further training or Apprenticeship. If you are 19 years of age then you can progress to the Access courses in Early Years or Health and Social Care to get to HE.
